Three years ago, Sam lost his mother in an accident. Since then his father Allan is no longer up to the task. This kind-hearted eccentric man is in no mood to open the doors of his bookshop specialized in rare books. But this time, there has been no sign of him since 10 days! Sam fourteen's birthday is coming, but he does not hear from his father on that day, nor does he hear from him afterwards. Now, Sam is sure of one thing: his father has vanished into thin air.
While investigating the cellar of his father's bookshop the boy discovers a secret passageway, then an old red book and a strange looking carved stone. As he manipulates the stone, Sam suddenly find himself hurled on a small island that is being attacked by Vikings! After many efforts he manages to leave the island the same way he got there. But only to land in the midst of the First World War in a villag being bombed by the Germans. He then discovers the beauties and dangers of Ramses' palace at the time of the Pyramids and later has to get out of a tricky situation in the marvelous city of Bruges in the 15th century.
When he finally gets back home, he discovers with the help of his cousin Lili that his father is stuck in the past, prisoner of the cruel Vlad Tepes, count of Dracule. Six centuries before his time, locked up in his cell Allan sends his son a message: "Sam, help me".
